Do It Now!

Things you’re always going to do later never do get done. What you put off until someday will always be out of your reach.

If anything is important enough to do someday, then it is worth starting on right now. If you’re going to actually do it, then you must do it in the moment you’re in.

Procrastination may seem like an easy way to avoid taking action. What it really is, though, is an ever-increasing burden of guilt and regret that you place on yourself.

Think of how awful it feels to know that you could have done, or could be doing, but instead you waited until too late. Fortunately, there is a simple and highly effective way to ease that burden.

Take action now. Choose something that you have continued putting off, and go ahead and get it done.

You’ve made many great plans and promises. Go ahead, act on them, and see how great it is to make them real.

Expectation Manifests In Our Thought Process

There is no secret that all of us want to be successful, but when we compare our actions with those that are already successful, we find a vast difference between what they do on a daily basis and what we do...

ALL successful people in the world will tell you that in order to achieve success in this world, you first have to achieve it in the mind and to achieve success in the mind means letting all that you desire to consume your thought process all the time.

Once we have mastered the thought process of successful people, then we are going to start talking like them and speaking success over our lives. The power of our thoughts makes our words even more powerful because the minute we begin to say something, it means that we have thought about it long enough to believe it.

Faith in our words leads us to act, but it is not enough to act when we feel like it, we need to do it over and over again until the point where we no longer think about it but we just do it. Once we have reached this point in our lives, success is no longer what we think, what we say or what we do, it becomes who we are.

What we need to learn today is that, we cannot expect to be successful if we don’t think like successful people, because only once we start thinking like them, will we be able to talk like them which will go a long way to us beginning to walk that talk.

As the saying goes: “Watch your thoughts, for they become words.  Watch your words, for they become actions.  Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

Building Long Lasting Networks

Networking is daunting. However it is the most important skill in business and life in general. Building networks takes time, and it requires patience. Building quality relationships takes time! Focus on building good; reliable relationships, that you will cherish for a life time.

Four things to consider

1. Trust

Deliver your service with integrity consistently. Prove that you are reliable and you are completely interested in your client’s satisfaction with your service. This will earn your trust, an important foundation for your relationship with your clients.

2. Reciprocity

Every networking encounter should bring value to both parties. Do not waste your time and do not waste other people’s time either. Be clear with the exchange of value and be confident.

3.Time

Time is money, use it wisely. Select your networking opportunities carefully. Have clear goals and ensure that you achieve them. If an event does not yield the desired result do not repeat the experience.

4. Respect

Respect the relationships you have built. Meaning continuously deliver the value you promised during your first encounter. Only share a contact if it is an extension of the value you promised to deliver.

Make networking a way of life and not an occasion. Invest time in planning it and selecting your networking opportunities. Be brave; be confident and be worth it.

Business Insights with Bertha Dlamini

A topic on business insights is very broad. I am a student in business and will remain a student in business for as long as I can. For this reason, I cannot claim that this piece will give you comprehensive business insights but I hope that the few things I will share will illuminate facets in your thinking that will aid your journey in business.

If all South Africans thought of business as a Value Proposition; I believe we would build more businesses and fear the prospect of being entrepreneur less.

Every business idea should embody a value proposition for the customers/clients it aims to serve. It should further aim to serve those clients better than the next person. Most importantly there should be a valid commercial case of it – in other words you should be able to make money out of it. Not just cover the cost; but to reinvest into the business and make a decent profit to justify its existence.

So what is a value proposition?

Simply put a value proposition is providing a solution fit for an identified need; and demonstrating return on investment for the cost of the solution. Customer needs evolve and change continuously and so should your value proposition if you are to remain relevant for your chosen market.

A few pointers

1. Know your customers and understand their needs. Determine how your specific solution meets these needs;
2. Analysis the existing market pricing of your service; understand what customers are willing to pay; determine how you will differentiate yourself from competitors;
3. Describe the opportunity in the market for your service; be specific and detail how you position your company and your service in the market;
4. Establish direct relationships with clients in your chosen market. Continuously grow your network; build relationships with the right people – the decision makers;
5. Ensure that your are correctly priced for the market and for your business;
6. Build easy repeatable processes in your business
a. Document process
b. Build easy to use templates
7. Get a reliable and affordable legal team
8. Have a strong relationship with your finance team
9. Understand labour law
10. Understand your product/ service – protect your IP

Other things to watch out for:

• Watch- out for single client dependence – don’t put all your eggs in one basket; diversify your client base
• Focus on quality of service/ solution/ product; invest in improving your quality
• Watch all lines: Top line, expense rate, bottom line. Be diligent with your targets; your expenses and your profit margins.
• Watch out for fatigue – your business needs your energy
• Avoid toxic relationships – work with integrity; uphold your values; and avoid relationships that sap your energy.

Finally as an entrepreneur commit yourself to long life learning so that you can evolve with market changes and ensure that your value proposition continuously and consistently meets existing and future customer needs. Read, Read and Read some more on your chosen industry. Mastering your craft through study is your best investment.

What FAITH stands for

In Malibongwe Xaba's article 'Is your WHY big enough' he challenged us to find out how big is our WHY, this got me thinking of an acronym for FAITH that world renowned author and speaker, Nick Vujicic came up with in his debut book titled “Life With Out Limits”. He describes FAITH as Full Assurance IThe Heart.

When you have Full Assurance IThe Heart, your mind becomes focused on possibilities and not limitations, you start focusing on solutions to your problems, in that way you are able to turn all the negatives around you into positives because you believe whole heartedly and that WHY that Malibongwe eluded to in his article becomes more intensified and your actions then automatically handle the HOW part of the equation.

The HOW part in Malibongwe’s journey was sorted out by a Blackberry Smartphone which he used to write his first book “All Things Are Possible”, the title says it all doesn’t it? He managed to do this because he had Full Assurance IThe Heart that he was going to live his dream and because of this strong FAITH, he was able to channel his mind to work with what he had and make the most of it.

Sometimes we limit ourselves because we are too focused on what we don’t have, Nick had no limbs and Malibongwe had no funds but they knew that they had a purpose and they were not about to let anything stop them, today they are both telling their story to the world and making a difference in many people’s lives because they believed in their dream so much that any instrument put before their eyes, was seen as a tool towards living that dream.

The lesson to be learned today is that, with Full Assurance IThe Heart (FAITH), All things are possible and there is no limit to how far you can go.

A life lived on purpose is a life that is destined to be fulfilled. When you know why you are doing what you are doing then obstacles become opportunities. Be clear about your purpose, don't be scared about what people might think or say.

A purpose driven life attracts abundance and unlimited resources, all things will work out according to your purpose. To uncover your purpose you need to challenge yourself and ask why you are doing what you are doing and then you will find your purpose in the answers.

Is Your WHY Big Enough?

If your WHY is big enough you can achieve anything”

Use your current situation as a chance to grow because God will never rush you to your destination until you are ready. He will use what’s around you to get you to your destination. Every time when I look around me I see greatness. Most of the time we often look at our situation in pity sometimes in pain and we fail to see the greatness within.

Ask yourself these following questions WHY do you want to succeed in life, WHY me? Most of the time we focus on the HOW instead of WHY and we immediately limit ourselves, I started speaking in 2006 for 6 years I was focused on the HOW. HOW can I make an impact? HOW can I do what I love and get paid? It was always HOW HOW HOW and my answers were always limited.

In 2012 I changed my question to WHY, WHY do I want to make an impact? WHY do I want to be successful? WHY do I want to build my granny a house? WHY gives you an emotional attachment to your goal and creates a desire in your heart to achieve it. If your WHY is big enough your HOW will take care of itself, when you give your goal or vision an emotional attachment you can achieve more as your brain will always push you to achieve it.

The birth of my book didn’t come on the HOW but came on the WHY if I concentrated on the HOW can I write a book? It was going to limit me because I didn’t have a Personal Computer at that time. My question became WHY should I write a book? Why is my story relevant to young people? With all the answers I got I was fired up and I used what I had to get what I wanted.  When your WHY is big enough limits become opportunities, disappointments become appointments. I look at myself and my achievements for the past year I am humbled but my WHY was big enough.

Don’t be afraid of changes. There will be many times when things will do not go as planned. You can either sit back and feel defeated or create a new plan but never change your vision. You have the power to control your reactions and create the life that you want. Now is the time to embrace change and welcome new beginnings, as you carve out a new journey for yourself.

 You are an amazing person. Believe it and your options will be limitless. Now is the time to be YOU and all that you are meant to be! Now is the time to defy the odds, take a risk and dive right in. Your greatest successes will be realised when you are not afraid to fail.

Declare War On Your Challenges!

In life we are often faced with challenges, some of our own doing and some not but one thing that is entirely in our control is how we choose to react to them...

We have a choice to either stand up and fight or sit back and let them destroy us even further, however what we chose to do will ultimately define who we become.

We were all brought on this earth to make a difference, what impact that difference makes on the world depends on how big you want to dream irrespective of your current situation.

Challenges are not there to destroy your dreams, they are there to test if you have the character to sustain them, it's a test that those who pass with flying colours soar their way to greatness.

Go ahead, make that choice today, stand up to those challenges, show them who's boss and take charge of your own destiny!

Follow Your Passion - Sibongile Sambo

Sibongile Sambo turned her dream of flight into reality by becoming the first black female to own an aviation company in South Africa. Her story shows us that real go getters are not defined or defeated by their difficulties.

Born in 1974 in Shatale Township in Bushbuckridge, Sibongile’s interest in aircrafts started when she was a young girl. Whenever she saw a plane flying overhead, she would stop immediately and imagine herself in that plane. “I used to play on the streets and I would see these planes fly by and I would wave with eagerness, being curious to say you know what one day I want to know what is happening inside and outside of those planes. The only thing I knew about aviation back in the day was being an air hostess not even a pilot. I tried my luck so many times at being an air hostess, I would dress in suits looking so elegant and look like them (air hostess), I would do well in the interviews because I looked the part and I was knowledgeable I had done my research about the industry but unfortunately they wouldn’t take me because of my height I was too short, I’m still short even now.”

Sibongile holds a number of qualifications including a Bachelor of Administration degree in Industrial and Political Science, a Bachelor of Administration Honours and an Advanced programme in Organisational Development, a Marketing certificate, and a Mining Executive Preparation Programme from Wits University. Her road to academic excellence wasn’t easy as she struggled with aligning her passion with a suitable academic program. “In my first year I registered for BComm in Accounting I failed my first year and I was advised to take up teaching or nursing, I said no I would rather stay at home if that’s the case. I then registered a BA in Industrial and Political Science”.

On the road to founding her own enterprise, Sibongile got her first job in the Human Resources Dept. at Telkom and then went on to occupy various posts in City Power, NSA Securities and De Beers. When she decided the time was right, Sibongile took the plunge into aviation for keeps and this time, she wasn’t begging anyone to hire her as an air-hostess, no sir!

“Ironically when I got my letter of appointment from Telkom, SAA also sent me a letter of appointment to be part of their cabin crew. I then asked my grandmother which job must I take and she said ‘with these aero planes you will fall off the sky so please go and take the job of what you studied for’ so I took the job with Telkom.”

Sibongile touches on her passion for entrepreneurship and how it got ignited. “When government came up with BEE and encouraging us to start businesses that’s when I realized that I am more of an entrepreneur than a corporate person, and how I came to that conclusion is that I would come up with great ideas very quickly and I would get extremely frustrated when my boss would block my new ideas. I’d also get bored quickly with the work that was given to me in the office. I then searched my soul and asked what is it that I really like in business that I can start and aviation was an obvious choice for me.”

SRS [Sibongile Rejoice Sambo] Aviation was founded in 2004 with loans from Sibongile’s mother and aunt. Its mission statement is to offer clients professional and personalized flight options to destinations around the world. “I remember it was December 2004 when the government gave us our first order and I remember it was an order worth over a million rand to do a flight and we needed to have the money within a few days because they wanted the flight to happen immediately, I had no experience and no collateral for the amount of money that was needed so I couldn’t be helped. I had to think of an alternative way of funding this opportunity because I had already resigned from my last job. I had to call my mom who was working as a nurse in London, I needed R800k to bring an aero plane from Dubai to South Africa to come and commission this first flight for my client. My mom had to leave her job, come back home and cash in her pension money. My aunt who I grew up with also left her job and cashed in her pension money, my friends and family also chipped in, I had to sell most of my assets very quickly to fund this project.”

Unlike ordinary entrepreneurs Sibongile never saw starting the business as a risk even after using her mother and aunt’s pension money and also quitting her job, to many this would be the ultimate risk but she saw it as an opportunity mainly because she was indulged in the feeling of gratifying her childhood dream. “To be honest I never thought about losing, for me this was the beginning of a winning game. I didn’t think it through I was just fired up with passion of seeing this dream become a reality, and for me even that voice inside me that spiritual voice that says that you will make it; that is the voice that I listened to.”

Sibongile has endured a somewhat difficult time trying to break into a male dominated industry. It hasn’t been easy, it’s been a huge task but it’s been worth every sleepless night I’ve endured. The company is now well established and is a growing enterprise, with an annual turnover of R54 million. To me, that alone is an incredible achievement.”

Her awe inspiring journey to success has been characterized mainly by her mission and personal statement which goes as follows: “I know who I am. I can never forget where I come from. I know where I am going. To reach for my dreams and conquer the challenges; I will dare to be different; and with proper guidance and direction and with God on my side, nothing is impossible. I am indeed a future leader.”

“I would like to say to every young person male or female that is aspiring and in pursuit of something extraordinary: The sky is not even the limit, you can do it, and if you have a dream don’t let it die. Keep the spirit going, keep that dream alive do something about it, do not procrastinate, don’t sit back, don’t listen to those negative voices that will tell you that you can’t make it. If somebody tells you that you can’t do it, tell them that ‘I can and I will’. You can reach the skies you can reach your goals. Go for it! Chest out, stomach in and with a big smile go out and conquer.”

Go After Your Dream

If you can envision it in your mind you can do it, all you need to do is believe it. Be your own cheerleader and push yourself towards your goal. Don't ever let anyone convince you that it can't be done. Don't let the challenges steer you away from your purpose rather use them to elevate your desire. If your dream wasn't attainable then you wouldn't have had it in the first place.

Never be afraid to dream, because when you cease to dream you cease to live. Dream big but most of all do bigger!

Go ahead and dream - Nhlanhla Ngobeni

"Nonotjie, get off the table...it's not a stage!!! And that's a cup, not a microphone." My mother said these words day after day, year after year, until her face turned erythraean. There was very little she, or any other member of the family, could do to stop me. They had no choice but to make peace with having a "special" child in the family. Every time we had a family braai or any other family gathering or celebration, I would put my Doctor Martins on, plastic cup microphone in hand, and hit our guests with some Boom Shaka and a little bit of Michael Jackson. They would cheer me on and litter the floor with cash, which would make pocket money for months. Maybe all they saw was a cute chubby child fooling around, but I took my work very seriously. Every performance was preceded by hours of rehearsal. I felt like a star.

I started school and it didn't take long for the teachers to pick up my talent. We were in grade 4 when the teacher asked us to do a poster showing what we aspire to be when we grow up. My poster was the most colorful, just as I saw it in my dreams. It showed me on a stage with a microphone in hand; stars, music notes and TV screens floating all round. All other normal kids, showing bigger ambitions and a greater sense of purpose, aspired to be doctors, pilots and all that other cool stuff. So as you can imagine, I definitely stood no chance of getting the biggest gold star for that project. I was however, a star in my own right, as I sang in all the choirs, played in the orchestra and starred in the school plays. While all my friends went to play, straight from school I dashed to church. That was my happy place because there I could actually grab a real microphone and sing my lungs out. At that time nobody, not even I, knew that it was a training ground, creating capacity for a dream that was burning violently inside of me. The dream to be a world class performer, shining on the biggest stages, radio and TV.

With age, the dream became clearer and brighter. When I matriculated I knew exactly what I wanted to study in varsity, but convincing my parents proved to be like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 10 minutes. A career in performance arts simply didn't make sense to them. I needed to get a "real job" and perform as a hobby maybe on weekends. I don't blame them, they were just being parents and wanted what was best for me. The lesson I got from it, is that your dream is your dream. Nobody can dream it for you and nobody can live it for you. It won't necessarily make sense to others, and sometimes not even to yourself. You have to learn to be the player and your own cheerleader because others may not understand your dream. You have to be totally sold out to your dreams because, in the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”. I was crushed but the denial to study what I wanted didn't kill the dream, instead it added fuel to the fire and caused me to take action. I remembered a sermon from my pastor when he said "write down your dreams and plans. Believe with all your heart that they will come true because nothing is impossible with God. Pray over your dreams and speak them to life". So with those golden words in mind and faith like a child, I made five posters and put them on my wall. Of the five, two were focused on my career as a performer. The one written "Broadway, here I come" and the other "Hollywood, get ready". I know it sounds retarded but I would wake up every morning, as a quantity surveying student, and speak over those words. I found lectures rather laborious and whilst all other good students would sit there and attentively listen to teacher ramble on and on, I would sit there thinking how they are all such a wasted audience. Thinking how awesome it would be if I randomly stood up and burst out in song and bowed to their deafening applause.

To cut a long story short, the time came when I was granted the freedom to do whatever I wanted with my life. So there I was, a young man from Giyani, in the big city of Johannesburg. All I had was a dream but had no idea where to start. I started at the bottom, and when I say bottom I mean bottom. I joined a casting agency and did little jobs as an extra in TV commercials. It was nothing to sing home about and definitely not the kind of stuff that would settle the bills. As big a guy as I am, I felt very small. At this point when people asked what I was doing with my life I didn't know what to say. As difficult as it was, I had to endure because I knew it was a crucial part of the process and character building. Collin Powell reminded me that a dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. I believe that when you are faithful with the small things, you create capacity for greater things, and so I excelled in the small roles I was given. A couple of feature roles along the way did my confidence a bit of good because at least people could say that they saw me on TV. The dream kept burning and the dreamer in me refused to be complacent because I knew that bigger things were yet to come.

After almost two years of being a struggling artist, I was working with an amazing theatre production called Die Empty, when a friend of mine told me about auditions for a big Disney production. After countless unsuccessful auditions, the mention of yet another audition was not going to send me leaping for joy. When I later found out that the auditions were actually for The Lion King, I had ten thousand more reasons not to go. I had heard that thousands audition and they only take a small number like 20. With so much talent in Johannesburg, who was I to make a cut of 20? At least 100 would inspire a bit of confidence. I had also heard that even the ones that make the cut do so after multiple attempts. The day before the audition I was sitting in my room and the words on my wall shouted at me. I remembered that the Lion King was actually a Broadway production. I knew right there and then that my time had come. I read out the words on the posters with immeasurable conviction and prepared myself to go and show Disney what I was made of at the audition. With my first audition I made the cut and went to Brazil to do the show there for 2 years. Only God knows how beautiful that experience was. I share this story with you right now, sitting in a fancy hotel in New York City, getting ready to make my debut appearance in the most amazing show in Broadway. Now let's all take out our guns and shoot the guy that said dreams don't come true.

I share my story with no intention of bragging about anything. I don't share my story because I think I have "arrived". I do not share my story as the secret to success to the 10 steps to living out your dreams. I am just a young man who is totally sold out to his dreams and wishing to encourage others who will dare or will at least try to do the same. Go ahead and dream. Dream in color, HD, 4D or whatever rocks your boat. The good thing about your dream is that it's yours. Nobody else can put limits and restrictions to it. You are never too young or old to dream. Go ahead and revive even those dreams you got discouraged and allowed to die along the way. I'm encouraged by the fact that many of the things we enjoy today; be it the Internet, television, cellphone... the list is endless. All those things were once dreams. Thank God many of those wonderful inventors refused to go to their graves with their dreams not shared with the world. I chose to be in the winning team, the dream team. This team could do with many more members like you. When you see me starring in those Hollywood films, don't say I didn't tell you so. At least you got the heads up before the rest of the world.

"Reality is wrong. Dreams are for real." Tupac Shakur
